A bridal saree is not simply a heavier version of an ordinary one. It has to survive a long day, photograph under mixed light, sit correctly while you are seated for hours of ritual, and still be the thing you unwrap twenty years later to show someone. Those are engineering problems as much as aesthetic ones, and they are what separate a bridal piece from a festive one.

What makes a saree bridal rather than festive?

Three things, in order of how much they matter. Weight — a bridal saree carries enough zari, thread or stone work that it falls straight instead of fluttering, which is what makes it read as substantial in photographs. Border and pallu — the work concentrates where it will be seen from a distance and while you are seated, so a broad worked border and a heavily done pallu do more than an all-over pattern. Which colour should a bride wear?

Red remains the traditional answer across most of India, and it is traditional for a reason: it holds its intensity under the warm, uneven light of a mandap where softer colours go flat. Maroon and wine do the same with a little more depth. But the convention has loosened considerably — brides now choose rani pink, deep purple, emerald and gold, particularly for a reception rather than the ceremony itself.

Day wedding or evening?

Daylight flattens heavy zari and makes very dark colours look solid rather than rich, so a daytime muhurat suits lighter grounds with strong border work. Evening functions are where deep reds, maroons and heavy metallic work do their best — artificial light is what those finishes were designed for.

Which fabric holds up through a full wedding day?

Silk, and it is not close. Silk keeps its pleats through hours of sitting and standing, does not crush the way georgette does, and carries weight without dragging out of shape. Banarasi silk goes further: the zari motifs are woven into the cloth rather than embroidered onto it, so the pattern cannot lift or fray, which is why a Banarasi bridal saree is the one that gets handed down. Georgette and net are lighter and more comfortable, and they are the sensible choice for a reception or a sangeet where you will be moving rather than sitting.

How is a bridal saree different from what guests wear?

Mostly by degree, and by an unwritten rule about not competing. Guests and family wear the same fabrics with lighter work and in colours that stay clear of the bride's — which in practice means avoiding solid red at a Hindu wedding. What to check before you buy

• The blouse piece — whether it is included, and how much fabric comes with it. A worked blouse needs more than a plain one.
• The fall and pico — most bridal sarees need both stitched before wearing, and that takes a tailor a day or two you should not leave to the last week.
• Weight in hand. If you cannot carry it comfortably for ten minutes in a shop, you will not enjoy it for eight hours.
• The reverse of the embroidery. Neat work on the back is the honest signal of quality on the front.

How to store a bridal saree afterwards

Dry clean it before storing, not after — stains you cannot see will oxidise and appear months later. Wrap it in cotton or muslin, never plastic, which traps moisture against the zari and dulls it. Refold along a different line once a year so the creases do not become permanent breaks in the thread. Kept properly, silk lasts generations; kept in a plastic cover, it will not last a decade.
