Which printed saree suits daily or office wear?
Cotton, cotton blends and light georgette in small repeating prints - florals, geometrics, bandhani - with a plain or narrow border. They carry a full working day, wash at home and do not announce themselves. Keep large placed prints and metallic borders for functions: on a printed saree the scale of the print sets the occasion more than the colour does.
Does a printed saree fade?
Only if it is dried in the sun. Sunlight, not washing, is what takes colour out of a print. Wash cold and inside out with a mild detergent, dry in shade, and wash a dark or brightly printed saree on its own for the first two washes, since printed rayon and cotton both bleed at the start. Press on the reverse so the print does not glaze.
How do you judge a printed saree from photographs?
Look at where the print meets the border and where the pallu begins. On a well made saree the print is cut to the panel and the join is deliberate; on a rushed one the pattern runs off mid-motif. Check that the pallu carries a different or larger version of the print rather than the same repeat - that is what makes a drape look designed rather than cut from a roll.
Which blouse goes with a printed saree?
A solid one, in a colour lifted from inside the print rather than matching the background - that is what makes both the print and the blouse read clearly. A printed blouse against a printed saree works only when one of the two prints is much smaller. For an evening, a solid blouse in a deeper shade with a worked neckline lifts a simple printed saree more than a busy blouse ever does.
