An indo-western outfit keeps an Indian element — the embroidery, a dupatta, a lehenga skirt, a dhoti fold — and sets it against a silhouette borrowed from Western tailoring. A kaftan over tapered trousers is indo-western; so is a cape over a co-ord. It is not fancy dress: the Indian part must do real work, not sit there as a motif.

Indo-western dress vs lehenga, gown and saree: what is the difference?

A lehenga choli is three pieces — skirt, blouse, dupatta — and reads as formal Indian wear at once. A gown is one continuous Western piece with a fixed neckline. A saree is unstitched cloth that becomes an outfit only when draped. Indo-western sits between all three: mostly stitched, ready to wear, rarely more than two pieces to manage. Kaftan or kurta?

A kurta is fitted through the shoulder and falls straight from there. A kaftan is cut wide at the shoulder, so the fabric moves rather than hangs. Kaftans forgive a long function; kurtas hold a sharper line. Put slim pants under a kaftan and it turns into evening wear.

Dhoti pants, palazzo or sharara?

Palazzos are wide and flat from waist to hem, and read clean and modern. Dhoti pants fold at the hip and drop fabric between the legs, carrying the most drama. Silk is the backbone of festive fusion wear. It has body, takes heavy embroidery without puckering, and photographs well indoors because it returns light instead of swallowing it. Right for a winter wedding, wrong for a June afternoon. Georgette and chiffon are the opposite: light, fluid, built to move. Georgette keeps a little shape as it falls; chiffon is sheerer and wants a lining. Crepe is matte and skims instead of clinging. Organza is crisp and translucent, better as a sleeve than a whole garment. In an Indian summer, weight beats fibre name: air moving across skin is what cools you.

Which indo-western silhouette suits your body shape?

A kaftan skims everything and defines nothing, which is either the point or the problem. If you are petite it can swallow you: look for a tapered pant to put a vertical line back in, or belt it at the waist. Co-ord sets break the line at the waist and suit almost everyone. A cape broadens the shoulder, balancing fuller hips. Halter necks lengthen the neck. Dhoti pants add volume exactly at the hip — wonderful for drama, skip otherwise.

Which colour indo-western outfit for haldi, mehndi, sangeet or reception?

Haldi is a daylight function, so marigold, yellow and orange photograph correctly in sun. Green is the traditional mehndi shade. Sangeet means evening and artificial light, where rani pink, purple and blue come into their own — they stay saturated under warm lighting that turns pastels grey. For a reception or cocktail evening, go deeper: maroon, wine, black, midnight blue. Softer shades — onion pink, beige, khaki, grey — suit a puja or a daytime lunch. Rust and brown sit well in winter.

How to wash and store fusion wear

Dry clean anything embroidered, sequinned or in silk: the work fails before the cloth does, and that is what a machine ruins. Georgette, chiffon and crepe hand wash cold with a mild detergent, but never wring them — press the water out in a towel and dry flat in shade, since sun fades dye faster than washing does. Iron on low, on the reverse, with a cloth over any embellishment. Keep silk in muslin, not plastic, so it can breathe.
