Organza and net hold their shape and give volume without weight — good for structured silhouettes, less good if you will be in a crowd all evening. Velvet is a winter fabric: it looks expensive on camera and becomes unbearable in an Indian summer hall.

What colour should I wear to an evening party?

Indoor party lighting is warm and yellow, which flattens pastels and lifts jewel tones. Wine, emerald, sapphire, deep teal and black all gain depth under it. Powder pastels can wash out entirely unless they carry sequin or zari work to catch the light. Black is the safest evening colour in Indian party dressing and the one most often skipped — a black saree with gold work is one of the hardest outfits to get wrong.

Party wear versus wedding wear — what is the difference?

Wedding outfits are built to be looked at for a long time from close range, so they carry denser work, heavier fabrics and more structure. Party wear is built for movement and for photographs. A bridal saree can weigh several kilos and takes help to drape; a party saree should be something you can put on yourself and dance in. If you are attending rather than starring, the party version is almost always the right call.

How do I style party wear without overdoing it?

Pick one thing to be loud. If the outfit carries heavy work, keep jewellery minimal and let the fabric speak. If the outfit is plain — a solid satin gown, a clean-drape georgette saree — that is when statement earrings and a strong lip earn their place. Heels matter more than they seem to: a floor-length silhouette is cut assuming some height, and the hem is what people notice first when it drags.

Caring for party wear

Sequin, zari and stone work should never see a washing machine. Dry-clean only, and tell the cleaner where the work is so they can flat-press around it rather than over it. Store embellished pieces folded in a cotton or muslin bag rather than plastic — plastic traps moisture and tarnishes metallic thread. Hanging a heavily worked saree for months stretches it at the shoulder of the fold, so refold it a different way each season.
