Embroidery is what separates a saree you wear to a function from one you wear to work. It is also the part of the price that is easiest to misjudge, because two sarees can carry the same amount of work and cost very differently depending on whether that work was done by hand, by machine, or by a computerised frame.

What are the different types of saree embroidery?

Zari work uses metallic thread — traditionally real gold or silver, now usually a coated polyester core — and is the oldest of the wedding embroideries. It sits flat against the fabric and catches light rather than throwing shadow. Thread work, or resham, uses silk floss in colours and reads softer; it is what most floral motifs are made of. Sequin and stone work sits proud of the surface and is built for artificial light, which is why it dominates evening and reception wear. Gota patti, from Rajasthan, applies ribbon rather than thread and gives a raised, slightly rustic edge that suits mehndi and haldi functions.

How can I tell hand embroidery from machine work?

Turn the saree over. Hand work leaves an irregular, knotted reverse with thread ends that were tied off by a person. Machine embroidery leaves a flat, uniform back, often with a stabiliser layer still attached. Neither is wrong — machine work is even, durable and affordable, and most of what people wear is machine-worked — but hand work carries small inconsistencies that read as depth from a distance, and it should cost more.

Which fabric holds embroidery best?

Heavier bases carry heavier work. Silk, raw silk and velvet take dense zari without buckling, which is why wedding sarees are usually built on them. Georgette and chiffon are soft and will pull under weight, so embroidery on them is deliberately kept light and scattered rather than solid. Net and organza sit in between: they hold sequin and cutwork well because the work becomes the structure, but they need lining. If a saree feels stiff in the hand, that is usually the base doing its job, not a flaw.

Where should the embroidery sit?

Border-only work is the most flattering on most frames because it draws the eye down and keeps the drape clean. All-over work looks the richest in photographs but adds visual bulk, so it suits taller frames and structured drapes. Pallu-heavy work is the compromise most brides and guests actually choose — the weight sits behind the shoulder where it is seen in profile and in photos, and the front stays light enough to move in.

Embroidered saree versus printed saree

A printed saree carries its pattern in dye, so it is lighter, cheaper, machine-friendly and completely flat. An embroidered saree carries pattern in thread, so it has texture, weight and a shadow line that a print cannot fake under direct light. For daywear and travel, print wins on practicality. For anything photographed indoors, embroidery wins, and it is not close.

Caring for an embroidered saree

Dry-clean only, and say where the heavy work is so it can be pressed around rather than over. Never iron directly onto zari or sequin — the heat flattens the metallic coat and dulls it permanently. Fold with a sheet of muslin between the layers so raised work does not print itself onto the plain sections, and store away from plastic, which traps moisture and tarnishes metal thread.
