Men's Kurta Pajama - Buy Kurta Sets for Men Online

The kurta pajama is the one ethnic outfit an Indian man can wear to a Sunday puja, a friend's sangeet and a family dinner without looking like he tried too hard. It is loose where a suit is tight, and it survives a long humid evening. Our men's kurta range runs from printed kurtas for ordinary days to embroidered and jacket-layered sets for the wedding season.

What is a men's kurta set, and what comes in it?

The kurta is the long tunic; the pajama is the bottom. A men's kurta set is the pair sold together, cut and coloured to match. Some sets add a Nehru jacket or an ethnic waistcoat, which turns an everyday outfit festive. A band collar gives the sharper, dressier line; a plain round neck lets the outfit stay quiet.

Kurta pajama vs sherwani vs jodhpuri: which should you wear?

The difference is mostly structure. A kurta pajama is unlined and soft, so it moves with you: right for a haldi, a mehndi, a puja or a house function. A sherwani is a long, lined, buttoned-through coat worn over a churidar — heavier, more formal, traditionally the groom's garment. A jodhpuri, or bandhgala, is a tailored short jacket-and-trouser suit that borrows the closed collar from ethnic wear and the fit from Western tailoring — the pick for a reception where a sherwani would be too much. If the invite says black tie, you want a tuxedo — satin facings on the lapel and buttons separate it from an ordinary suit. For the ground in between, see our indo-western range.

Cotton kurta pajama and other fabrics: what each one actually does

Fabric decides how the outfit behaves all evening. Cotton breathes and does not cling in humidity, which makes it the honest choice for summer and daytime functions; it creases, but on a kurta that reads as lived-in. Linen is cooler still, though it wrinkles enthusiastically. Silk and art silk carry a low sheen that photographs well under evening lighting. Jacquard and brocade are woven rather than printed, so the pattern sits in the cloth and outlasts a surface print. Velvet is for winter weddings and nothing else.

Which kurta silhouette suits your body shape?

Length is the lever most men ignore. A knee-length straight kurta suits nearly everyone. If you are short, keep the hem above the knee and choose a vertical print or a solid; a long kurta eats height. If you are broad through the middle, let the kurta skim rather than cling. Tall, slim men can carry floor-skimming lengths and heavy layering that swamp a smaller frame.

Choosing the bottoms

A straight pyjama is the comfortable default. Churidar pants gather at the ankle and dress the outfit up, best with a longer kurta. Aligarhi and dhoti-style bottoms want a shorter kurta so the drape stays visible.

Wedding kurta pajama colours: haldi, mehndi, sangeet, reception and puja

Yellow, mustard and marigold orange are the haldi shades — also the ones you will not mind staining. Mehndi mornings take green and teal. Sangeet is the night to wear a colour — maroon, rust, deep blue or a multi-coloured print, since black swallows detail in photographs. Receptions reward restraint: ivory, cream, beige or midnight blue under a jacket. White and pastels belong at a puja; grey and muted solids keep the outfit wearable at the office.

How to style a kurta pajama

Footwear carries the outfit: mojaris or juttis for anything traditional, Kolhapuri chappals for a daytime function, leather loafers when you want it to read semi-formal. Never wear sports shoes with a kurta. Jewellery should be sparing: a brooch or kalgi on a jacket lapel, a slim mala for a wedding, a good watch. A raw silk stole over the shoulder adds ceremony. Skip the bag; a slim leather sling matching your footwear is the only workable option.

How to wash and store a kurta pajama

Wash cotton and linen kurtas cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dry them in shade — direct sun fades dyed and printed cloth. Have embroidered, silk, brocade and velvet sets dry-cleaned; embroidery threads snag in a machine drum. Iron on a medium setting through a thin cotton cloth, never straight over embroidery or a printed motif. Store festive sets on padded hangers in a breathable cotton cover, not polythene, which traps moisture.

FAQs

What is the difference between a kurta pajama and a sherwani?

A kurta pajama is an unlined tunic worn with a soft bottom — light, comfortable and suited to a haldi, mehndi, puja or house function. A sherwani is a long, lined, buttoned-through coat worn over a churidar; it is structured, heavier and traditionally the groom's garment. As a rule, if you will be standing all evening in the heat, wear the kurta pajama; if you are the centre of the ceremony, wear the sherwani.

Which fabric is best for a summer kurta pajama?

Cotton. It breathes, absorbs sweat and does not cling in humidity, which is why it works for daytime functions and outdoor events. Linen is cooler still and drapes with more weight, but it wrinkles readily. Save silk, brocade and velvet for evening and winter functions, as they hold warmth against the body.

What colour kurta should a man wear to a wedding?

Match the shade to the function. Yellow, mustard and marigold orange for haldi; green and teal for mehndi; maroon, rust, deep blue or a multi-coloured print for sangeet, since dark neutrals lose detail in photographs; ivory, cream, beige or midnight blue for a reception. If you are a guest rather than the groom, leave the heaviest gold and full ivory to him.
